The Earth seen from space: the fires in Greece
The satellite Envisat of the ESA, has captured images of thick clouds of smoke from forest fires ravaging the Greek peninsula and threatening Athens. More than 2,000 firefighters and soldiers struggling to contain the flames of the fire as a pest of Greece since 2007. At the time of the fatal fires had devastated the country killing over 70 people.
These fires started late Friday evening in the village of Grammatikos approximately 40 kilometers northeast of Athens. They have burned at least 15,000 hectares of land and forced thousands to flee their homes. The state of emergency was declared last Saturday by the Greek authorities after the fire has spread to two neighboring villages.
