In video: SMOS first satellite to map the salinity of the seas

smos-satellite-espace_esa_02Projects of the ESA (European Space Agency), European satellites SMOS (Mission study soil moisture and salinity of the oceans) and Proba-2 has just been launched by a Russian rocket from the Baikonur Rockot Russian Plesetsk. Launched this Monday, November 2, 2009 at 2 am 50, the satellite SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity) will be the first to map the salinity of the ocean surface and to monitor soil moisture. It will thus refine our understanding of the water cycle on Earth. This information will help improve weather forecasts, including extreme events and climate, that is to say large-scale and long term.SMOS is part of Planet Living intended to provide data on critical issues identified by

the scientific community while designing innovative observation technologies. For example, SMOS is fitted with a Radiometer Imager Microwave: Miras (Microwave Imaging Radiometer using Aperture Synthesis).
